HOMEWORK CLUB

What is it? Homework Club is a relaxed and stimulating space where young people can receive support with their homework, and participate in creative activities. We aim to create a space for self-expression and experimentation: for young people to be creative, to play, to explore, to think for themselves, and to question the world around them and their place in it as active participants.

When is it? Homework Club takes place every Wednesday and Thursday after school, from 3PM to 6PM.

Who can come? Young people (ages 6 - 16 years) can attend once a week (either a Wednesday or a Thursday).

I. neglect. the. house: Poetry Workshops

What is it? I. neglect. the. house is a weekly poetry workshop. Together we will read, talk about and sometimes write poems (in all the different forms poetry shows up in).

When is it? Every other Wednesday evening (fortnightly) from 6.30PM to 8.30PM. You can join at any time, and attendance every week isn’t required. The next workshops are: 17th April, 1st May, 15th May.

Who can come? Workshops are open to everyone (ages 16+), whether you have been writing for 20 years, or have never written a poem before.

Introduction to Scriptwriting

What is it? Led by local writer Bel Greenwood, Introduction to Scriptwriting is a 10-week course, taking you through the foundations of writing for theatre and film. It is hands-on, practical and activity-led.

When is it? Every Friday afternoon from 1PM to 3PM, beginning Friday 1st March (last session 3rd May).

Who can come? Workshops are open to everyone (ages 16+), whether you have been writing for 20 years, or have never written before. Places are limited so you must enrol to join the course.

CREATIVE ESOL

What is it? Creative ESOL is an open and friendly space where adults can learn English using creative approaches such as music, art, poetry, conversation and storytelling, creative translation, drawing, play, experimentation, walks and outside exploration, and pamphlet publishing.

When is it? Every Saturday morning from 10AM to 12PM, beginning 2nd March.

Who can come? Creative ESOL is open to all adults, of all languages. There will be a particular focus on Beginners English, but people of all levels and abilities of speaking and writing English are welcome. There is free childcare (8 years +) for anyone who may need it.

RED SATURDAY SCHOOL

What is it? Inspired by groups elsewhere such as Red Sunday School, it aims to create a space with young people for self-expression and experimentation: to be creative, to play, to explore, to think for themselves, and to question the world around them and their place in it as active participants.

Led by the desires and decisions of the kids, activities include creative writing, kite-making, reading and discussion, film screenings, drawing and painting, gardening and growing, walking and exploring, magazine making. There is also a multilingual kids’ library to borrow books from.

When is it? Red Saturday School runs every other Saturday (every 2 weeks) from 10AM to 12PM, beginning 2nd March.

Who can come? Young people aged 8 - 16 years. The first session on 2nd March will explore “imagining other worlds” through creative writing.

DROP IN WRITING SESSIONS

What is it? Drop-in sessions are intended for anyone looking to get on with their own writing (or reading) undisturbed: whether for a self-initiated project, or school or study, hobby, passion - or if you’re trying to finish writing the piece of writing you’ve been working on for the past 10 years!

When is it? From 1PM to 4PM every Friday, beginning 1st March. You can just turn up on the day, but it’s best to sign up to the newsletter below to be kept in the loop if for any reason doesn’t run one week.

What facilities are there? There are work spaces across the 3 floors of the building free to use, an accessible toilet on the ground floor, tea and coffee, WiFi, and a library of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and kids’ books (most of which are not stocked by Norfolk Libraries). Resources also a printer and a risograph printer (for printing en masse).

How much does it cost? You must be a paying member of red herring press (from £1/month to £10/month) to attend drop-in sessions. Membership costs go towards paying the electricity and heating bills, building rent, and materials (eg. printing). See here for more info on Membership. However, no-one will be turned away for lack of funds.
